Mulgimaa – a community with entrepreneurial spirit!

Mulgimaa is a historic region in southern Estonia. Mulgi farmers were known to be wealthy and the first in Estonia to start buying their own farms from landlords in the late 19th century to cultivate flax. Their growth in wealth was demonstrated by the building of stately houses, as well as being able to send their children to study at the best and most expensive schools. 

Today Mulgimaa fascinates the senses with its unique nature and heritage from the past, as well as with exciting ventures and active people. Three Mulgi cultural icons: the dialect, the well-known men’s long black jacket and the traditional Mulgi porridge have survived to this day.

Võrtsjärv is the sea of ​​Mulgimaa – there are exciting places, lovely people and good fish dishes here.

Mõnnaste Dairy

On the way to Lake Võrtsjärv, we stop at a beautiful Mulgimaa farm. We visit Karmen, who has fixed up a dairy with her family and introduces the history of this house there. We also enjoy her beautiful garden.

Next, we go to Valma village house, where the landlady has cooked eel soup for us. We will listen to the stories of the fishermen and find out what kalepurjekas means. Valma is a fishing village with signs "Smoked eel" on the side of the road. We will look for some local fisherman to buy smoked fish or eel from.

Kipre farm

We will move along Lake Võrtsjärve towards Oiu harbor and see various fishing farms along the way. It's great to see how all the old fishing nets, boats and buoys are put to good use.

Oiu harbour

We will take a walk on Võrtsjärv and hear stories about the emergence of Võrtsjärv and today. The braver ones can go on the water with water bikes.

Oiu also has Igluhuts – one double cabin and a small sauna.

At Oiu Resto, we can taste fish again.

Viinakingu farm

Here, Uno and Astrid are waiting for us, who are already enjoying retirement and are active fish lovers. Uno goes fishing and Astrid puts everything in a jar. We can taste and buy their delicious food. In addition, Astrid has a talent for gardening.
